Cardiovascular disease is usually associated with older adults. As the obesity epidemic continues unabated worldwide obese children and adolescents are also being diagnosed with the complications of cardiovascular disease.
At the same time that the BMI increases there is often a corresponding increase in blood pressure among obese children. These children are at increased risk for vascular structure dysfunction and metabolic syndrome. Cardiovascular disease in adults often have their origin in childhood. The risk factors for cardiovascular disease include hypertension, obesity, elevated cholesterol levels and diabetes.
A study investigating the association between BMI in childhood and coronary heart disease in adulthood found that children with high BMI in childhood had increased risk for fatal and non-fatal cardiac events as adults.
